Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
