The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
