Slot Maintains He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was expected for doubts to be raised about his future after another convincing defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's worst streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I feel secure, things are alright, I have got significant backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be great to change things and get a victory obviously but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it's expected that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. It is not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to expand on his dialogues with the team officials, the head coach explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me constantly of the day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I feel the trust. However I've not talked to them after this defeat yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Problems and Player Reaction
The manager expressed regret over known failings from his squad in their European defeat, specifically wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his view of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder said.
“It is unacceptable. I don't have to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I play for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a period such as this with performances this poor.”
He finished, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as that badge is removed, we’re always going to compete.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad return to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
