Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a memoir next month named Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience served in jail.

This news emerged just 11 days following the ex-leader left prison as he contests the guilty verdict related to criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire election campaign funds provided by the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, suggesting the account will focus on his musings from seclusion as opposed to wider commentary on the strained and struggling French prison system.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where noise is constant sound,” he continues. “The noise persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, Sarkozy was present remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as draining. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, showing great humanity, and who helped make this nightmare manageable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII from France to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the texts he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where a blameless person is sentenced to jail later flees to take revenge.

Prison Conditions

Sarkozy was held in isolation to protect him in a room roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel were stationed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay due to concerns any food could have been tampered with. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain every day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings he would be safer released rather than in custody. “He has faced threats against his life, has heard screaming at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

He entered custody on 21 October following a Paris court gave him a half-decade term on conspiracy charges related to a plan to obtain political donations during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial set for early next year.
