The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
