Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Recording That Triggered the Dispute

The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in military or security positions.

"As we did, you all swore an oath to protect and support this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that violate the legal system or our founding principles."

The Former President's Furious Reaction

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he stated: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives React

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a joint announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no position in the United States," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our United States with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to make certain the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme online messages and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.

Representatives' Firm Answer

The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a response.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this United States and took an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "All citizens must unite and denounce the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."

Additional Partisan Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of public representatives."

He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."

The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the government telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in US history."

The Republican leader also allegedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and determine all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."

"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson said. "There are active officials of the federal government who worked together to arrange a video message to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."

She said: "The integrity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
