Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing issues the company was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company
The recent development deepens the continuing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first created in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Future Plans
The founder indicated that he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
