Administration Lowers US Flights as Government Closure Stretches On

With the record-breaking federal government closure approaches day 38, US skies is about to get somewhat quieter. This doesn't apply for US air travel hubs.

Protective Actions Enacted

The current administration's aviation regulatory body stated air travel is being curtailed to uphold air traffic control safety during the federal government funding lapse, setting a new duration record and with little indication of a solution between Republicans and liberal officials to end the federal budget impasse.

Flight oversight bodies pinpointed “busiest routes” where the FAA says air traffic must be reduced by 4% by early morning Eastern Time on Friday, an action that will compel airlines to scrub numerous flights and create a series of scheduling problems and setbacks at major US air terminals.

Official Statement

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, wrote on online platforms Thursday that the decision was “not about politics” but rather “about assessing the data and alleviating building risk in the system as air traffic professionals continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the forward-thinking steps we are taking,” Duffy remarked.

Flight Cancellations

Experts predict hundreds or even thousands of flights might be called off. The flight decreases may constitute up to 1,800 flights and more than 268,000 seats combined, based on an calculation by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Impacted Locations

The affected airports covering over 25 states include the busiest ones across the US – featuring ATL, North Carolina's city, Denver, DFW, Florida destination, LAX, Florida hotspot and Bay Area airport. Within major metropolitan areas – including NYC, Texas city and Illinois hub – various airports will be involved.

The trio of airports operating in the DC metro – Washington Dulles international, Baltimore/Washington international and DCA – will be involved, inevitably causing flight disruptions for elected representatives as well as the flying public.
